The properties of the fig/fig leaf
Why is the fig/fig leaf so beneficial to us? The US Department of Agriculture has confirmed that this is because the Fig is a natural product that is high in fiber, calcium, magnesium, copper, manganese, iron and vitamins A, B, C and K. The fig also contains folic acids, sodium and Zinc, as well antioxidants, the latter of which has a laxative effect.

Figs and health benefits

It has been scientifically proven that, although the fig and its leaves should not be considered as a cure, they have healing properties and health benefits that can improve the well being of people by reducing the risks associated with a number of health issues, among which are included the following:

Diabetes 2:  The rise in the numbers of people suffering from type 2 diabetes is causing concern across the medical profession globally. However, research has confirmed that fig  leaves positively contribute to a reduction in the levels of external insulin required by people suffering from diabetes. Indeed, Nat Hawes, the author of Natural Cures, recently suggested that“fig leaves could be the ‘cure’ for diabetes and help regularise blood sugar levels”.  A previous scientific study conducted by scholars in 1998also discovered that when diabetic participants were provided with fig leaf nutritional products, the subsequent average insulin dose required was reduced by 12%.

Blood pressure:  Maintaining a healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels is important to continued good health for all of us. Tea made from fig leaves or their extracts has been shown to have an effect in controlling blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as reducing the fatty deposits that can accumulate in blood vessels. Thus, the fig leaf can have a positive influence on helping to reduce obesity, as well as reducing the risk of cardiac problems such as heart attacks and strokes. Equally, as maintaining the level of red blood cells is important, the fig and its leaves have also proven to be of particular benefit to women during pregnancy.

Cancer:  Cancer is a dreadful disease that affects so many people in the world today. Therefore, any product that helps to combat this disease is to be welcomed. Studies have indicated that the regular eating of figs can be beneficial in reducing the risks of certain types of cancer, such as prostrate, breast and colon cancers.

Bones:  We all want, and indeed need, stronger bones, not least because they help to keep us active and mobile. With its combination of magnesium, calcium and K2, it has been found that the fig can help in the maintaining and building of stronger bones.

Insomnia:  Lack of sleep resulting from insomnia can have an adverse effect on the quality of our daily lives. There is nothing worse than feeling tired and listless all day. Including the fig in your daily diet can have a positive benefit in improving your sleeping habits and providing you with that extra energy you need by reducing insomnia.

Skin conditions:  Skin conditions such as acne, genital warts, shingles and ulcers and hemorrhoids are not only unsightly and often embarrassing, but they can also be very painful. The use of fig and fig leave extracts can provide external remedies that will help to cure these conditions, and thus help to relieve their painful consequences.

Stomach conditions:  Due to its laxative content, the fig can have a positive effect in reducing constipation. The eating of the fig can also be beneficial in addressing other stomach problems such as ulcers.
Suggestions for use
The following are just a few suggestions of how you can use the fig and leaf as part of your daily diet and for other health giving benefits:

Nutrition
  • The Fig Fruit: Make eating the fresh fig the first of your five a day fruits. It will be a delicious part of your healthy diet and provide you with the important cardiovascular, insomnia and cancer benefits that have been described
  • Fig Leaf tea: If you purchase our tea product, this is as simple as making a tea in your own home. Simply add hot water to a spoonful of the organic fig tea, relax and enjoy a refreshing cup a few times a day. However, if you are more adventurous and want to make the tea from the leaves, using fresh filtered or bottled water all you need to do is to boil fig leaves (about 4) in this water and there you have your own handmade tea, which as noted is beneficial for diabetes and other health conditions. The will add to the benefits of eating the fig described above, and can also be beneficial in providing relief if you have bronchitis.
  • Fig Leaf soft drink:For conditions such as liver cirrhosis simply grinding 4 fig leaves with sugar, placing the mix into a medium glass of cold fresh water and drinking twice a day will give you the health giving benefits in a cool and refreshing soft drink
  • The edible leaf: Unless you have a particular allergy, for improvement in ulcers simply chew and swallow two fig leaves a day, which should be done early in the morning when your stomach is empty.
Healing
  • Warts, boils and Scalp fungal infections:  If you are suffering from any of these conditions, the simple braking the leaf and applying the milk of sap that flows from it to the infected area, including the genitals, will provide you with relief and heal the infection
  • Shingles:  For shingle relief you can place three or four fig leaves in two cups and bring to the boil for a few minutes. Once it has cooled sufficiently, using a clean wash cloth, you can dip this in the fig leaf infused water and apply to the affected area of your skin.
  • Hemorrhoids:  To relieve the pain of hemorrhoids and itching around the genital area, place two to three leaves in a liter of water and bring to the boil. You can then either apply it to the affected area, or add it to a shallow warm bath (known as a sitz bath), which will increase person hygiene and provide further relief
